Dogs and cats are the most well known pets that may have allergies. In fact, one of the most common problems in dogs and cats is allergies. Like any human allergy, when a dog or cat is allergic to something their immune system overreacts. There are four main ways that you will notice dog or cat allergy symptoms. The dog or cat may have a localized itch or itching all over, it may have nasal and eye discharge, it may have respiratory problems like coughing and sneezing, or it may have digestive problems like vomiting or diarrhea.
A dog can be allergic to fleas, food, contact with a substance like cloth, inhaling items or bacteria. A dog can be treated for allergies in several ways. Special shampoos can be used on them, since some allergens are thought to get through the skin. As well, a dog can be given an anti-inflammatory like cortisone. Also a dog can be given hypo sensitization therapy, like people. That is where the dog is given injections of the allergy antigen until they build up a tolerance.
Cats also suffer from allergies. A cat with allergies can have the same symptoms as a dog, and the cause of the allergies can be the same as well, although they are not as prone to contact allergies. The most common type of allergy in cats is probably inhalant allergy. Like people, cats can be allergic to pollen, weeds, dust mites mold and mildew, as well as other things. But unlike people the cat usually suffers itching symptoms from this as opposed to respiratory symptoms like people do. These allergies are usually seasonal. Foods allergies in cats are not that common but it does happen sometimes with foods they have eaten for a long time. Allergy to fleas and ticks is common in cats and can cause a variety of problems.
